The Raw Materials for Cashmere are Quite Rare
Cashmere is made from a specific type of goat and the raw materials are actually quite rare. There are only a few places in the world where the Cashmere goat is farmed, and only their undercoat is suitable for weaving into yarn. It’s hard to find pure cashmere, and many companies turn to blending their knits with synthetic fibres to make up the difference.
We may use blends, but only with our high-quality wools and other natural fibres. If your cashmere feels stiff, appears shiny or doesn’t feel super soft to the touch; it’s either a blend or another variety of wool being presented as the real thing.
How to Care for Cashmere
Cashmere is a type of wool, and its care is similar to how you would look after other woollen garments. One difference is that you should never machine wash a cashmere garment. Dry cleaning is a good method for washing, but you should spend some time with your dry cleaner to suss out just how they’re going to handle your clothing. The best option is to hand wash the item using cold water and a mild detergent.
Once you’re finished washing, press the water from your garment. Never wring it out! Some people use a salad spinner to remove excess water, though this too may stretch the fabric. It should be laid flat to dry and will take several days. This is where everything becomes risky because you’ll need to make sure your garment is protected from moths. They love cashmere snacks! Once dry, always fold your garment and put it away in a drawer. Hanging cashmere jumpers will cause the fibres to stretch and the garment to lose shape over time.
It’s Worth the Extra TLC
It seems like a lot to clean one little sweater, but it’s definitely worth the effort! Cashmere, like any type of wool, has natural properties that keep the garment clean. So, it’s likely it won’t need washing after a single wear. However, even if you plan to wash every time you wear, it’s still worth it. Cashmere is one of the softest varieties of wool available, and it has an elastic quality to the fibres that allows a lot of room for movement.
With proper, care your garment will last a very long time. Long enough, in fact, to become a family heirloom. Imagine patiently teaching your children how to care for something you know will one day be theirs. A warm hug to wrap around themselves when they have children of their own.
Bring a Little Cashmere Luxury to Your Life
That’s exactly why people search for true luxury in life. It’s not about keeping up with the neighbours, feeling fancy or treating yourself to the finer things. It’s about recognising that what’s considered a “finer thing” got that way by being the best. We live in an instant world where we don’t think twice about buying disposable items, but not everything should be disposable. Some things are meant to last, to walk with you through the years, and to become part of the legacy you leave behind. Shop our selection of cashmere jumpers online today and find a little piece of your future and, eventually, your past.
